The GFWC Junior Woman’s Club of Verona recently awarded scholarships to four college bound students from Verona High School’s class of 2009. They included: the Minette McKenna Memorial Scholarship to Katie Kiernan; the J. T. Reisman Scholarship to Ryan Papera; the Jane Myers Memorial Scholarship to Rebecca Hartke; and the GFWC Junior Woman’s Club of Verona Scholarship to Brianna Theobald. The recipients received their scholarships at an awards night held at Verona High School.
The Verona Junior Woman’s Club earned the Diamond Dozen Award which acknowledges the top twelve clubs in New Jersey that provide the greatest level of support to their community at the 82nd Annual Convention of the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs. The convention which was attended by more than 250 New Jersey clubs was held at the Hilton Parsippany on May 16th.
The Verona Juniors Woman’s Club was also awarded six distinctions for its outstanding commitment to community service in the following areas:
First place- Membership (The club installed seventeen new members this year.)
Second place- Advocates for Children
Second place- Arts
Second place- Communications
Second place- Education
Second place- International Affairs
Club co-presidents Nicole Kobernick and Cheryl Mizia were placed on the honor roll along with ten-year member Suzanne Welsh for their dedication and service to the club. Past president Lisa Freedman received the Order of the Lily which is a recognition of service at a state level.
All of the NJ Junior Clubs donated a total of 141,740 volunteer hours and a total of $1,460,705 in 2008-2009.
